If the buzz surrounding celebrity scents is over, nobody told Neil Katz. The new president of Par-lux is quite confident that the public’s love affair with all things celebrity—including fragrance—will continue for years to come.

In recent weeks, the industry veteran has signed up pop icon Jessica Simpson and fashion designer Nicole Miller to new fragrance deals. Meanwhile, Katz and his team is getting ready to roll out Can Can, the new fragrance from Paris Hilton, next month.

“Paris Hilton does $75 million wholesale,” Katz explained. “This country and the world is in love with celebrities and celebrity scents will remain important for the near future.”

But not just any celebrity will do. Katz maintained that too many companies are content to sign anybody who’s somebody.

“You have to be sure that people identify with the individuals, rather than just want to sing like them or play sports like them. There has to be a great affinity (for them).”
